Polyphony is characterized by the simultaneous combination of two or more independent melodic lines, creating a complex texture where each line retains its individuality while contributing to a cohesive overall sound. This means that, in polyphonic works, each melodic line can be heard and used as a focal point, fostering a rich tapestry of interwoven melodies. In contrast, homophony centers around a single, predominant melody supported by accompanying harmonies, where the accompaniment complements, rather than competes with, the melody.

This distinction is essential in understanding musical textures. In polyphonic music, such as a fugue or a round, each part can stand alone as a complete melody, contributing to the overall harmony. On the other hand, in homophonic music—like a typical pop song or a hymn—the supporting chords are primarily there to enhance the main melodic line, and listeners typically emphasize that singular melody as the focal point of the piece. This fundamental difference in structure and focus underlines why the statement regarding multiple independent melodic lines versus one main melody accurately encapsulates the essence of polyphony and homophony.
